What's Been Happening
|
|
|
Hi Everyone!
This "what's been happening"
page is a place where we can keep our articles of fun events that have happened throughout the entire school year. We
didn't want to just remove these fun events from the "home" page to never be seen again. So, here they
are for you to enjoy through the year!

Dr.
Seuss Day Celebration!
We had a great time celebrating Dr.
Seuss' Birthday! We had community members join our classrooms to read Dr. Seuss stories to the students. Kids
always have a great time listening to the silly adventurous stories written by Dr. Seuss! They had a silly
time themselves making Dr. Seuss-like hats and topped off the day with a celebration cake!! Thank you to all of
our wonderful readers and to Mrs. Hersom, our Librarian, who made this day possible!

Milkweed
Puppet Theater
We loved our recent visit from the Milkweed Puppet Theater! Using old-fashioned
hand puppets, Nancy Tyndall of Milkweed Puppet Theatre put on a fantastically funny show for our students. And boy did we
laugh!!!

Zoey (second from the left) has a birthday tradition that
could teach us all a lesson in generosity. Each year, instead of presents for herself, Zoey asks family and friends to give
her items that she can donate to people less fortunate. This year she asked for mittens and hats for children who need them.
MacDougal School was so happy that Zoey thought of us!! We received a very large assortment of hats and mittens!! Now some
MacDougal School students, who otherwise wouldn't have mittens or hats, are able to enjoy recess during the frigid winter
months.
We
all can learn something from Zoey! Thank you!!

Fiddle-dee-dee
|
|

MacDougal students had a treat at their last assembly. Kip Yattaw, came
to play his fiddles and talk about how he makes them. The music made everyone want to tap their toes and clap. Thank you,
Mr. Yattaw!

Mr. Sommo is our "healthy lifestyle" role model!
|
|
Mr. Sommo, who is an avid member of the Bicycle Coalition of Maine,
rides his bike to school instead of driving his car. The astonishing part...he lives 20 miles away! Now, that's
a role model!
Mr. Sommo is not only our special education teacher, he is a bicycle
safety instructor for the Bicycle Coalition of Maine. He travels throughout Maine training teachers, police, medical
professionals, health educators, and volunteers how to teach bicycle safety. For more information on the Bicycle
Coalition of Maine go to bikemaine.org.

Rocky Richards Leads Our Take Time Program
|
|

Ms. Richards continues to lead our staff and students to become more
fit through daily physical activity. As our Take Time Champion, she surprised us at our last assembly when she appeared as
"Rocky Richards" to lead us in our latest take time activity that combined vigorous movement with the alphabet.
Thanks, Ms. Richards!

We're
on TV!

|
|
We'll be on TV! Channel 11 news visited our school last week! Mrs.
Linscott's students were interviewed by Ms. Beaster about the igloo they built in class and Mrs. Richards' class was
filmed participating in our Take Time Program. Coverage of our Dr. Seuss Day Celebration can be seen as well.
The program about MacDougal School should be on channel 11 by the week of March 10th. Keep your eyes out, it should
be great!!!

Will he or won't he? Groundhog Day at the Berry Manor Inn
|
|
That's the question we all asked when we were invited to the Berry
Manor Inn for a Groundhog's Day celebration. Everyone enjoyed helping the groundhog and his shadow wake up to take a peek
outside. Unfortunately, he did see his shadow, but stayed around long enough for pictures to be taken with each class and
for cookies and cider to be shared. Many thanks to the Berry Manor Inn for a fun time!

2007 Holiday Fair a Warm-Spirited Success
|
|

The MacDougal-South School PTF Holiday Fair that took place December
13th was once again a huge success. This event could not have taken place without the tireless efforts of so many parents,
teachers, friends and staff of the South School and MacDougal School. Many hands makes for light work as the event took place.
Children of young and old took part in the Holiday Crafts, Games and Raffles as well as a hearty Lasagna Dinner and
Cookie Decorating. The PTF family wants to recognize the newly appointed Chairperson Rebecca Albright who truly is dedicated
and committed to the cause of enriching the lives of our children and teachers.

|
|
Thank you to all the parents and students who supported MacDougal's book fair.
Our book fair sales total was $879.00. We hope you all enjoy reading your new books!!

A
Farewell for Mrs. Brackett
|
|

After 20 years of serving as MacDougal School's secretary, Mrs.
Brackett has retired. Staff members throughout MSAD 5 joined together, at MacDougal School, to wish Mrs. Brackett a "happy
retirement"!! I think a few of us were a little envious!!

Pumpkin Fairy Visits MacDougal School!
|
|

|
A Pumpkin Fairy?? There must be one because she (or he) recently visited
MacDougal School! MacDougal School's first grade teachers heard, through the grapevine, that a pumpkin fairy might
truly exists so with that in mind, they sprinkled pumpkin dust and wished on the moon and poof! Pumpkins appeared!! When students
and teachers arrived the next morning, the front lawn at the school was covered in pumpkins!
The teachers and students
couldn't wait to go outside to pick a pumpkin. After returning to the classroom, everyone had a great time with a "will
it sink or will it float" science project involving their pumpkin. Students learned that no matter how much a pumpkin
weighs, if you add enough water, it will float. Students also weighed and measured their pumpkins, designed their own jack-o-lanterns,
and painted pictures of pumpkins.

We recently held our first school assembly! To help everyone better
understand the importance of Red Ribbon Week, Woody Moore, the health coordinator for MSAD 5, spoke at our assembly. Everyone
enthusiastically joined in to say "NO" to drugs. Mr. Moore also talked about the Take Time (for exercise)
program and engaged the children in some fun and silly activities that really got them moving! Ms. Richards will be
our Take Time Champion and will coordinate the program at MacDougal. Thanks, to Ms. Richards for her willingness
to take on this extra work to benefit our students and staff!

Spooktacular Halloween
Party!
|
|

|
Thank you MacDougal/South School PTF for the fabulously spooktacular Halloween
party! Families had a great time touring the haunted hallway, making fun crafts, and playing games. After the
Halloween costume parade, best costume awards were given out...even to the adults!
Without the PTF and parent volunteers
events like this would not be possible. Thank you to every one who helped make this a great night!

Fire Prevention Week At MacDougal School
|

|
|
During fire prevention week, Fireman Mike from the Rockland Fire Department
visited our school to teach students about fire prevention and fire safety. Students love Fireman Mike, who is like a celebrity
here at MacDougal School! His visit was a fun and informative time for our students. They learned more about a fire fighter's
job, had the chance to see some of their equipment and most importantly, learned how to keep themselves safe during a
fire. It's important to talk to your family about fire safety and to plan and practice a home fire escape route so that
everyone gets out of your home safely.
Keeping with the
fire prevention theme, we recently had our first fire drill which went very well! Students were able to exit the building
very quickly and quietly and made it to their designated areas outside of the school.
Great job everyone!!

 MacDougal's Open House
Thank you to all the families who attended MacDougal School's open
house held in September. We had a fantastic turn out! Our teachers were very excited to meet our new students and to chat
with their families. It was wonderful to see classmates getting acquainted with one another. Both students and parents seemed
very excited to explore their new school environment.
To
help promote the importance of families reading together, a representative from the Rockland Public Library was present to
give out free library cards. Additionally, our Scholastic Book Fair took place during the open house giving parents an
opportunity to purchase new reading materials for their child. Happy reading to you all!!
We'd like to thank our Superintendent, Mr. Pfeiffer, for his support of our school and for his attending our
open house. It was a great opportunity for parents to meet Mr. Pfeiffer and to discuss various topics with him. Also in support
of our school, MSAD #5's Curriculum Director, Bob Brooks, was present as well as School Board Chairperson, Audrey Buffington.
