Ilmi Carter, School Nurse

Dear Parent or Guardian,

It is my hope that the information and tips I provide you will be beneficial to you and your family.  The wellbeing of your child is always my number one priority.  Please let me know if there are any changes in your child's health during the year so that I can meet their needs.  Let's all strive to have a happy and healthy school year!

Ilmi Carter, R.N.

Please call me at 542-5198 to let me know if there are any changes in your child's health during the year so needs can be met.   Thank you.

Dear Families,

webassets/springflowers.JPGSpring is springing--however slowly! Now that the warmer weather will be here, please enjoy the outside by going on walks, bike rides (wear those helmets!), play T-ball, or whatever your family enjoys! Set a good example for your children by getting outside!

Prevention Partners will be returning to MacDougal School in May.  They are dental hygienists who provide students with Mainecare insurance dental cleanings, fluoride, hygiene instruction, sealants and temporary fillings if needed.  If your child has Mainecare insurance, and has not been seen by a dentist in the past six months, please contact Mrs. Carter. If you have children in other school buildings in MSAD 5 who qualify, please let me know as well.

Some children sunburn easily, even on a cool spring day.  If your child is prone to this, apply a long acting sunblock before they leave for school.  Remind them to wear a hat during recess.  Remind them to drink extra fluids as children are generally more affected by the heat than adults.  It is not uncommon for children to come in from recess and complain of a headache and feeling sick.  They are probably feeling the effects of the heat. This will subside after they cool off with a splash of water on their face and neck and a long drink of water from the fountain.

It's time to see how much your child has grown!  I will be measuring students at MacDougal School per state guidelines in the coming weeks.

Happy spring!
Ilmi Carter

Medications During School

webassets/1pills2-thumb.jpgIf your child requires medication during the school day (this includes cough drops, Tylenol, etc.) the "Medication Form" (below) must be filled out by his or her physician.  You may personally deliver the completed form to our office or your doctor may fax it to us at 594-1210.  All medications must be in its original container, and for safety purposes, all medication is to be brought to the school by a parent or guardian.  Students cannot bring medication in their backpacks - this includes cough drops.

Thank you for your cooperation with this matter.

Health Concerns & Illness
(General Information)

If your child is too ill to go outside at recess, he or she is probably too ill to be in school (unless they are recovering from an illness).  Since supervision of students who remain inside is a concern, the office will evaluate all notes requesting a child to stay inside.

We ask your cooperation as we deal with some of the health problems that are associated with schools.  Students will be checked for health problems as the situation arises.  Please follow our recommendations so that your child will not be excluded from school.

Additionally, immunizations must be kept up to date per State of Maine requirements.  Please contact me if there is a concern.

Sun Safety Grant

The school has been awarded a grant toward sun safety! We will be building a sun shade structure this spring, and having a sun safety day to promote sun awareness. Most people are not aware that skin cancer, while largely preventable, is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Protect your family, by following these simple A, B, and C's of sun safety: Avoid unprotected exposure to the sun; Block out the sun by using sunscreen, Cover your body with appropriate clothing. In the winter, wear a hat and sunglasses. Put on plenty of sun block (spf at least 15). Reapply sun block every two hours. Remember, the sun is twice as powerful in the winter when it reflects off snow!

Stopping the
Spread of Germs

Teach and practice healthy habits

Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Prevent viruses from spreading by disinfecting frequently touched surfaces, toys, doorknobs, and other commonly shared items.

Mind your Manners

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and sneezing, and throw away used tissues. Teach children to cough into their sleeve. Parents may want to send in a box of tissues for their child to use when they have a cold.

What's mine is mine,
what's yours is yours

Make sure that the family does not share drinks, water bottles, or used eating utensils. Children should remember not to share drinks or cell phones with their friends when they are ill.
