Crossing Guards

Crossing Guards are provided to ensure the safety of our walking students. Students should obey the crossing guard and follow safe walking procedures. Reports will be made to the office regarding any student ignoring these procedures. You will be notified if the problem continues and disciplinary action could result.

Bicycles

Because of the traffic situation, students who ride bicycles to and from school must walk them while on school grounds. Students who do not follow this rule will not be allowed to bring their bikes to school. Children riding bikes should also cross with the Crossing Guard.

Safety Tips for Walkers

Parents should map a safe walking route to and from school for their child.  Parents should walk this route with their child until they are familiar with it.

Children need to be made aware that drivers may not always be paying attention or following the rules of the road.  Even when a child is walking on a sidewalk or crossing within a crosswalk, they must always be wary of the traffic around them.

Children should never wear headphones when walking or riding their bikes.

Children should stay on sidewalks whenever possible and be careful of cars backing out of driveways.webassets/crossingsign.jpg

Children should cross streets at the corner and within the crosswalk.  They should also heed pedestrian crossing signals whenever possible.

Streets should never be crossed when a siren is sounding.

Never attempt to cross a train track when the crossing gate is down or if the crossing light is red.

Bicycle Safety Tips

Because bicycles share the road with cars and other vehicles, cyclists must obey the same rules as motorists.  Ride on the right side of the road with the traffic flow, not against it.

Obey awebassets/1sign35-thumb.jpgll traffic signs and signals. Use correct hand signals.

Stop at all intersections and crosswalks, either marked or unmarked.

Children and adults should always wear a bike helmet every time they ride a bike.

Stop and look both ways before entering a street.

Yield the right-of-way to pedestrians and skaters.

Never wear headphones.

Have children ride on sidewalks and paths until they are at least 10 years old, are able to show good riding skills, and are able to observe the basic rules of the road.

If riding at dawn, at dusk, or at night, wear reflective clothing (not just light-colored clothing) and make sure that the bike has a headlight and a rear reflector.

Make sure the bike is in good working condition, especially the brakes.

When choosing a helmet get one that fits snugly and does not obstruct your vision; make sure it sits on top of the head in a level position, not tilted on the back of the head. Adjust the straps securely and keep the buckle fastened at all times.
