Dress Code

Dressing for Success

Dressing for success is an important part of learning. Dress codes are as common in the workplace as they are in schools. In order to provide an environment conducive to learning, safety and distractions from academic work are paramount concerns. While student dress and grooming are the responsibility of students and parents, guidelines are needed for appropriate judgment. The code below was established by a committee of students, teachers, administrators, parents, and school board members. Faculty and administration are charged with applying this code as consistently as possible.

Acceptable Clothing

FOOTWEAR

Safe footwear with non-marking soles (for safety, labs, and other special
circumstances closed toe and heel shoes may be required by the teacher) /

Athletic shoes are required for physical education classes


HEAD WEAR

Headbands, hairpins, barrettes, and scrunchies (such items worn as accessories to
keep hair from covering face)


TOP-WEAR

Long or short sleeved shirts, blouses and sleeveless tops that fully cover the chest,
back, sides and midriff either when standing or sitting (straps on strap type tops must be hemmed and wide enough to cover undergarments / All undergarments must be fully covered either when standing or sitting


BOTTOM-WEAR

Pants, shorts, skirts, or dresses that extend to mid-thigh or lower /

Pants, shorts, or skirts must be worn no lower than the belt-line /

All undergarments must be fully covered when either standing or sitting /

Slit skirts or dresses with the slit extending no higher than mid-thigh /

Shorts are to be worn for physical education classes unless otherwise instructed by the teacher for a given activity.


OUTERWEAR

Lightweight jackets, sweatshirts and sweaters.  Unless approved otherwise by administration all other outerwear including heavier-weight jackets and coats, hats, gloves and non-prescription tinted glasses are to be kept in lockers from the beginning of the school day until the student leaves the building.


JEWELRY

The decision regarding the wearing of the piercings is between the student and their parents. However, all piercings are to be removed for participation in interscholastic sports teams (practices and games) and during any scheduled physical education classes.

Unacceptable Clothing

Any garment, pins or buttons that draw attention to body parts, alcohol use, tobacco use, illegal substance use, or sexual behaviors - gestures, pictures, cartoons, sayings, etc.

FOOTWEAR

Any footwear that creates black marks on school floors and gym floors / Bare feet either in school or on school grounds / Socks or stocking feet either in school or on school grounds / Slippers or open toed footwear unsafe for lab participation as announced by the lab teacher

HEAD WEAR

Hats, visors, bandannas, or other head-coverings and sweat-style headbands are to be removed upon entering the buildings of MS AD #5 and placed in lockers until classes, meetings are over and the student exits the building. These are not to be carried from class to class.

TOP-WEAR

Deliberately torn tops / Shear or see-through tops / Low plunging necklines, halter-tops, and spaghetti strap tops / Exposed backs, sides, and/or midriffs when either standing or sitting / Any tops that expose undergarments / Extremely tight-fitting tops


BOTTOM-WEAR

Deliberately torn pants, shorts, skirts, or dresses / Pants, shorts, skirts or dresses that expose undergarments / Pants, shorts, or skirts worn below the belt-line exposing midriffs, buttocks, or undergarments / Garments shorter than mid-thigh /

Shear or see-through garments that make undergarments visible / Slit skirts or dresses with slits extending higher than mid-thigh


OUTERWEAR

Heavier weight jackets, heavier weight coats, hats, bandannas and other head coverings, gloves and non-prescription tinted glasses are not to be worn in school once student has arrived until student leaves the building


JEWELRY

Chains, spiked bracelets, spiked rings, spiked collars, and spiked belts / Piercings are not permitted in physical education classes or for sports participants during practices or games / Buttons or pins worn to draw attention to body parts, alcohol use, tobacco use, illegal substance use, sexual behaviors - gestures, pictures, cartoons, sayings, etc.

EXCEPTIONS TO ANY OF THE ABOVE MAY BE MADE FOR SPECIAL SITUATIONS APPROVED BY THE ADMINISTRATION, SUCH AS "SPIRIT DAYS", ROOM/SCHOOL TEMPERATURES, OR MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS.

CONSEQUENCES

First:  Verbal warning, cover-up clothing; change clothing brought from home.

Second:  Detention after school; meeting with parents.

Third:  Extended detention; meeting with parents.

Other than direct observation, students, teachers, staff may bring attention of possible violations to the notice of administration. Faculty and staff may address students directly in a discreet manner and time.
